In the beginning...
On March 10, 1917,
a band of 13 believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, led by the Reverends W.M. Dickerson and W.E. Clark, met in the home of Ike
Richardson to organize a church. A building was donated to the fledgling congregation to conduct worship services. The church
began to prosper both financially and spiritually, truly comiong together as a family under the leadership of Pastor Dickerson.
Later, the property at 920 Harding Ave. was purchased and remodeled. However, the congregation eventually outgrew this facility
in 1921, and the property at 943 Harding Ave. was purchased and a brick structure was erected in that spot. Its founding Pastor
led the church family until his resignation in 1922. From 1922 thru 1974, 16 men of God served as Pastors of the Saint Paul
flock. And they are
Reverend James Brown
Reverend J.W. Butler Reverend
A.L. Neblitt
Reverend R. Hayden Reverend C.E. Young Reverend J.G. Green
Reverend H. Pinckney Reverend
E.D. Witherspoon Reverend W.T. Snead
Reverend A.W. Martin
Reverend L.M. Johnson Reverend
E.B. Phillips
Reverend R.H. Carter
Reverend A.L. Scott Reverend
Reedie Moore
The present structure was completed in 1964 under Pastor A.L. Scotts administration.
Additionally, Pastor Scott renamed the church the Greater St. Paul Baptist Church. Pastor Reedie Moore later changed the name
to its present name.
On January 19, 1975, God
brought the Reverend E.D. Harper from Decatur, Illinois. During his pastorate, the churchs membership soared, with Sunday
evening services broadcasted over the radio each week. Reverend Harper served as pastor until his resignation on January 8,
1984.
In March of 1985, Reverend
Jeffery A. Johnson was selected to become Pastor. A young man with vision, his leadership and teachings on Biblical stewardship
drastically increased the number of tithing members, thus ensuring financial stability for the church family. In 1989 Reverend
Johnson became the Pastor of the Easter Star Church of Indianapolis. Following Johnson was Reverend Lindsay Curtis in April
of 1990. Under his leadership, the Soup Kitchen Ministry began along with many building improvements and expansions. He served
the Saint Paul family faithfully until his resignation in August of 1994.
The church was without a leader for the next 19 months. But then, prayers were answered on February 28, 1996,
when the call was extended to Rev. Terry M. Clark. He began his pastoral duties on March 17, and was installed on May
26. Pastor Clark began regular Bible studies twice a week, an ongoing tape ministry, and involvement in evangelistic
outreach efforts such as the citywide Jesus Video Project. The construction of a fellowship hall, a vision of Pastor
Curtis, was completed in 1998 under Pastor Clark's leadership. The Vacation Bible School has grown, with more students
throughout the community attending. The Laymen's League was organized, resulting in establishment of the Male Chorus.
During his pastorate, the size of the congregation has more than doubled, and the Watchcare ministry provided to college
students continues to increase church attendance among students each year. The church has been involved over the past
several years in distribution of Thanksgiving baskets to needy families in the area, as well as projects to provide necessary
assistance to elementary and middle school students and their families during the holidays. In 2004, Women In Action
For Christ was formed to provide ministry to church families and people in the community. Along with numerous improvements
made to the church's facilities, to include the sanctuary, other young men have been launched into the Gospel ministry. One
young associate minister was ordained and is now pastoring in Anderson, Indiana. Four other young men were licensed
into the Gospel ministry. According to Philippians 3:13-14, we are continually reaching forth to those things that are before
us, and we believe, that in Christ, the goal He has set for St. Paul is reachable. Our task, as indicated by our church's
logo, is "Changing the World through the power of the Word." To God be the glory!
Amen
Allow our history to become lessons that may strengthen and edify the vision into our FUTURE.
